Quote of the day

I got this from my friend Mary’s blog. It’s a quote from Dorothy Barresi’s Rouge Pulp. (Mary’s a poet, quite a lovely one at that, and reading her blog, which she calls a journal, is like a mini education in all the contemporary poets I have never heard of.)

The poem’s title is “Grendel’s Mother.” I love Beowulf, so this is awesome from the get-go. Then the fabulous opening lines:

Every mother is a monster.
If you don’t know that,
you don’t know anything about love.

It makes me want to howl at the sun.

I strongly agree with that and it should be written on every cute baby item that is purchased before giving birth.
