Food porn

So, my friend V got me a super cool calendar for Hannukah. It’s full of pictures of food porn — naked people with food on them. Nothing tacky, all very subtle and sexy and scrumptious. It made my day.

I like food porn. I like evocative writing about food and sensual pictures of food. I like … food. (It takes a lot of work to keep my figure!) Every year for Christmas, I like to make food for some of the people I can’t buy gifts for but don’t want to relegate to just a card. This year, as I have in several years past, I am making caramels. And caramel sauce.

Have you ever had really good, adult caramel sauce? Not that nancy-boy stuff you get at Starbucks or in ice cream parlors. That’s kids’ caramel, the color of a cocker spaniel, simple and sweet and all up front in your mouth with a nearly gummy consistency. No, I’m talking about real caramel. Deep dark auburn, the color of good coffee or an Irish Setter. Caramel where the sugar isn’t broken down so much as annihilated on a hot fire. Where the flavor isn’t actually sweet, but smoky and complex with roasted and earthy notes and enough sweet cream and butter in it to make it thick and rich on your tongue. A little salty with whiffs of vanilla and bourbon and hickory smoke.

Try putting that in your macchiato.

So everyone is getting a little tiny bottle with a ribbon tied around it and a couple of homemade caramels.

Have you read Isabel Allende’s memoir/book on food? I can’t remember the name, but it sounds like you’d love it. Her writing is so sensual in general…
