Math failure = too many strawberries

The Husband, Child, and I went strawberry picking yesterday with my folks. It was a compromise position with my folks for father’s day — only an hour drive for them. The same two hours as driving to their house, but it was something we actually wanted to do. Well, mostly.

Our CSA gives us 2 quarts for the week plus we could buy more quarts for $2. We picked up what we thought were 8 pint baskets — though I kept pointing out that they were really big for a pint, The Husband insisted so I didn’t make a fuss. But I was right, we discovered, and we wound up with a whole gallon of strawberries.

This morning I made 8 half-pints of jam. Six for giving away at Christmas and two for eating. Now, I don’t actually LIKE strawberry jam, so the Husband will be eating strawberry yogurt for the next month or so.

The thing is — that was only half the strawberries. The leftovers are starting to look a little tired so my night will be spent hulling and cooking berries. I’m exhausted but it’s the first harvest of the season and that means WORK. Because I’ve got to get this stuff processed or it will rot and our $4 will go to waste. This locavore stuff is tough sometimes.

Not to mention the $55 in gas we spent to get out there.
