Let them eat cake…. but what kind?

My birthday party is this weekend. I will be 35. More importantly, I will be making my own cake.

This is a big deal every year. But this year, with the diet thing going on, this is going to be my one sweet thing for the next four weeks. So it takes on a towering importance. So, I gotta figure out — what kind of cake am I going to make?

The obvious answer is, naturally, chocolate. But then what kind of chocolate?

I did this truffle torte for The Best Friend this year with a walnut crust that is pure sin and truly astounding. But it’s awfully rich for a hot August afternoon.

Devil’s Food Cake with a chocolate ganache? Or with buttercream? (That’s the traditional birthday cake in my family.) Or a caramel buttercream?

How about a yellow cake with chocolate ganache? Or a white cake with chocolate ganache?

What about that ganache — straight and smooth or whipped and dreamily light?

Or, I could mix it up. German chocolate cake is astounding. Or coconut cake. I LOVE coconut cake. It takes a fucking week to make, but it’s my birthday, dammit.

A white cake with seven-minute frosting and candied violets seems very Victorian — fairy cakes, as it were. Elegant and refined, perfect for the party theme (it’s a library party — guests will be helping to organize our library). I could certainly go with angel food cake drizzled with a fresh berry coulis, too. Very seasonal.

Of course, then there’s the ice cream option. While the family tradition is devil’s food cake with buttercream frosting, I was born in the hottest month and always got ice cream cake. So I could tuck the ice cream maker into the freezer and then the possibilities are endless… chocolate, vanilla, sweet cream, Oreo, cookie dough, fudge ripple, chocolate chip, bittersweet chocolate, Mexican chocolate, peanut butter ice cream….

Or the not-cake options. Tiramisu is a favorite this time of year.

Decisions, decisions, decisions….

Anything but the angel food cake with the fresh berry coulis. Sounds very yummy and very light for a hot summer day but if this is THE sweet thing for the next four weeks, do it up!

How about a lemon cake? Something like this would be good: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/LEMON-PISTACHIO-CRUNCH-CAKE-109405
