Devil’s food cake with buttercream icing

I’ve decided. I’m going with the traditional family cake. From scratch, of course, instead of from a box, but I’m doing the cheesy, back-of-the-box butter and sugar buttercream, not the silky smooth elegant one with lots of eggs and a luscious, silken texture. Nope. I’m going for the sugary crunchy buttercream of my childhood.

With ice cream on the side.

And I’ve changed the menu from gumbo to chili. Both one-pot wonders that serve a crowd with minimal effort. But gumbo takes time and my place looks like a bomb hit it. Chili is a matter of 15 minutes, then let it simmer for two hours. Skillet cornbread, tortilla chips, scallions, sour cream, salsa, and cheese on the side.
And I just got some new shorts from Eddie Bauer in the mail and even though they are two sizes smaller than I was wearing two month ago, they fit just fine. Yay for the gestational diabetes diet.
