Why I love living in my city

I meant to post this when it happened but life got in the way.

A few weeks ago, The BFF and I were on a rare girl date (“Fast and Furious” — I have a thing for Vin Diesel) and we stopped for drinks at ‘Bucks.

I had, that morning, ordered a “plain bagel with cream cheese, toasted. Toast the bagel, rather, not the cream cheese.” The same barista that afternoon mocked me (gently) for the clarification.

“Hey! I was a copy editor for something like ten years,” I waved my hand. “If I have imprecise syntax, I must fix it. I can’t help it!”

Another of the baristas popped in with a question about my opinion on the serial comma. (For non grammar nerds, the serial comma question is thus: When listing three or more items in a row, do you need to put the comma before the “and”? So is it “Tom, Dick, and Harry” or “Tom, Dick and Harry”?)

I expressed my opinion — I’m in favor of the serial comma and have four major style sheets to back me up — and the woman behind me expressed her opinion to the contrary. We got into an amiable if slightly heated discussion, which wound up roping in three other people (another barista and two folks waiting for their lattes).

I feel that my argument carried the day, but the fact remains, only in the orbit of Cambridge do you have complicated grammatical arguments while waiting for your chai.

Isn’t awesome when things happen like that.

actually, that happens in orlando, too. yes, in the land of the great unwashed, we have heated discussions on highly technical grammatical points of law.
however, this does NOT happen in the wasteland to the west [tampa].
